How public transport is paid in Belgrade in 2026

If you are visiting Belgrade for the first time — or returning after a few years — the fare rules will probably surprise you: since 1 January 2025, city public transport is free for all passengers. No ticket, no card, no validation — you simply board.
Still, “free” does not mean “everything, always”. A few exceptions remain paid, cash only, on board. This guide covers everything you need to know: what is free, what costs money and how much, how paying works in practice, and the most common questions.
What is free (almost everything)
Since 1 January 2025 no fare is charged to any category of passenger anywhere in the city network:
- bus lines (city and most suburban)
- trams
- trolleybuses
- EKO lines (electric buses)
- BG Voz (the city railway)
No ticket, no validation
Unlike cities where free travel applies only to certain groups and must be proven with a card, Belgrade has no procedure at all: no ticket machines, no validators, no registration. Board through any door and ride.
Night lines (letter “N” next to the number) have been free even longer — since 17 May 2023.
What still costs money: A1 and E lines
The exceptions are few but important — especially if you are heading to the airport or to far suburban settlements:
- A1 minibus (airport ↔ centre): 400 dinars per ride.
- Suburban express lines E2, E6 and E9: 200 dinars per ride.
How paying works in practice
On paid lines the ticket is sold exclusively on board, by the driver, cash only, in dinars. Vehicles give no change, so have the exact amount ready. Cards, euros and mobile payments are not accepted.
Arriving at the airport without dinars? Either withdraw cash at an ATM in arrivals, or skip the A1 and take the regular city bus towards the centre — like the rest of the network, it is completely free.
What this means for tourists
Belgrade is one of very few large European cities where a visitor rides public transport with zero procedure. No ticket machines to decipher, no zones or surcharges, no fines for a wrongly validated ticket — none of that exists.
The only rule worth remembering: if the vehicle says A1, E2, E6 or E9 — prepare cash. For everything else, just get on.
Will fares come back?
Free transport is a city policy and could in theory change. As of 2026 there are no announcements of fares returning. If the rules change, this page and the “Tickets & fares” page on busevi.rs will be updated — check them before you travel if you are reading this much later.
